Harbor Studio

Harbor Studio is the transformation of a former industrial warehouse into a flexible creative workspace designed for collaboration, exhibitions, and public engagement. The project preserves the raw industrial identity of the original structure while introducing contemporary spatial interventions that support evolving creative practices. The result is a workplace that balances heritage, functionality, and openness within Copenhagen’s historic dockyard district.

Beginning

The client sought a workspace that would operate beyond the traditional office model. The vision was to create an environment where designers, artists, researchers, and creative teams could work collectively while also hosting workshops, installations, and public events.

From the outset, preserving the authenticity of the original building became central to the project. Rather than concealing the imperfections of the warehouse, the design approach embraced them as part of the spatial character and narrative of the building.

The challenge was not only technical but conceptual: how to transform an aging industrial shell into a contemporary creative environment without erasing its history.

Harbor Studio

Site

Located within a former shipbuilding district near the waterfront, the existing structure consisted of exposed steel trusses, weathered brick facades, and large open-span interiors originally used for manufacturing and storage.

Despite its strong architectural character, the building suffered from poor insulation, insufficient natural light, and fragmented circulation. Structural preservation regulations also limited the extent of physical modifications allowed within the historic envelope.

The surrounding neighborhood was undergoing rapid transformation, creating an opportunity for the building to become a cultural anchor within the district’s evolving urban identity.

Design

The architectural strategy focused on contrast and restraint. Existing structural elements were restored and left visible wherever possible, while new interventions were intentionally minimal and clearly contemporary in expression.

A central light court was introduced to bring daylight deep into the building and improve orientation across the interior spaces. Flexible studio zones were combined with gallery areas, workshop spaces, meeting rooms, and informal gathering lounges. Large sliding partitions allow the layout to adapt depending on exhibitions, events, or collaborative activities.

The material palette remained intentionally understated, using polished concrete, blackened steel, oak surfaces, and translucent glazing systems that complement the industrial shell rather than competing with it.

Lighting design played a major role in shaping atmosphere throughout the project, balancing daylight with carefully integrated artificial illumination to support both work and public programming.

Harbor Studio

Result

Harbor Studio successfully transformed a neglected industrial structure into a dynamic creative environment that now supports a wide range of cultural and professional activities.

The project preserved the identity of the original warehouse while giving it a renewed civic and architectural purpose. It has since become an active hub for exhibitions, collaborative production, and public engagement within Copenhagen’s creative community.
